NESFAS Student bursary/scholrships for 2017

To all 2017 first year students who will register at public universities / TVET colleges for the first time in 2017 and need financial support can now apply directly to NSFAS for financial assistance. Applications will remain open between 01 August 2016 and 30 November 2016.

To all current university/ TVET college students already funded by NSFAS

NSFAS is in a process to receive all your information and details from the university/college where you are currently enrolled. You will be automatically migrated to the student-centred model, and will be notified by SMS/post once NSFAS has received and registered your details.


To all current university/TVET college students, who are not funded by NSFAS, but intend to apply for NSFAS assistance for the 2017 academic year

All the above mentioned students – including those who were previously on a government funded bursary programme not offered by NSFAS – can apply for NSFAS financial assistance for the 2017 academic year from 01 September 2016 to 30 November 2016.

To apply on the NSFAS website, you will be required to register first to create your personal online account, and then proceed to fill and submit the application form online. Teaching Bursary at Funza lushaka

The Funza Lushaka Bursary Programme is a multi -year programme that promotes teaching in public schools. Full cost bursaries are available to enable eligible students to complete a full teaching qualification in an area of national priority. Recipients of these bursaries will be required to teach at a public school for the same number of years that they receive the bursary.

Qualified recipients of the bursary must request placement in a province of their choice. The provincial education department (PED) concerned will determine if there is a suitable post available. If there is not, the applicant may be placed in a PED that does not have suitable vacancies.

Selection criteria include the following:

The applicant’s academic ability;
Eligibility for an approved degree or PGCE in two of the priority areas;
Commitment to a teaching career, which includes: interest in working with young people; enthusiasm for a professional career in teaching; readiness to face and surmount difficult challenges; and personal integrity;
Commitment to teach in any school to which a student may be appointed by a PED.
Everything else being equal, selection should favour candidates from rural areas, candidates who wish to teach in rural areas and candidates whose financial position would otherwise exclude them from enrolment for a teaching qualification.

The Priority Areas Are:

Foundation phase (i.e. Grades R-3):

Foundation phase specialization in an Indigenous African Language.
Intermediate and Senior Phase (i.e. Grades 4-9):

A teaching major in two of the following: Mathematics; Natural Science; Technology.
FET phase (i.e. Grades 10-12):

A teaching major in two of the following: Accounting; Agricultural Sciences; Agricultural Technology; Civil Technology; Computer Applications Technology; Economics; Electrical Technology; Engineering Graphics and Design; Geography; Information Technology; Life Sciences; Mathematics; Mechanical Technology; Physical Sciences.


What the bursary covers

Funza Lushaka bursaries cover all the recipient’s essential expenses.

Expenses covered include tuition, full accommodation including meals, books and learning materials, and a small allowance for monthly living expenses. 

The allocation to any individual student is capped at a specific value. 

Where the HEI charges more than the capped value the bursars will have to top up from own funds. Universities have different cost structures, so the total value of a bursary differs from institution to institution.

Conditions For Repeating A Year

The bursary period may be extended to cover one additional year in a degree programme, or the time required for completion of one additional course in the PGCE programme. Only one such extension will be granted. Funding for an additional year of study (i.e. 5th year) is not automatic and will be considered on a case by case basis. In cases where support is provided for an additional year, the service obligation for the student is extended by a year. Any additional time required will be at the recipient’s own cost. The bursary is renewable for one academic year at a time. On proof of academic success the bursary may be renewed each year until the recipient of the bursary has qualified as a teacher.

Conditions For Repayment Of The Bursary

The bursary must be repaid only if the recipient fails to qualify, fails to apply for a teaching post with a PED at a public school, fails to take up a teaching post with a PED at a public school, leaves a teaching post with a PED before the end of the contracted service period, or otherwise fails to meet a requirement of the bursary agreement.

Funza Lushaka Teaching bursary

Bursaries are awarded to full-time, part-time and distance education students who have been accepted to higher education institutions for the following degree types:

Bachelor of Education (BEd)
Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE)
Bachelor of Arts (BA), Bachelor of Science (BSc), Bachelor of Commerce (BCom) and Bachelor of Technology (BTech), Bachelor of Engineering (BEng) with majors suitable for admission to a PGCE programme upon graduation; at least one of the major subjects must be selected from the priority area subjects listed below.

• Applicants for the Funza Lushaka Bursary must meet the following basic requirements in order to be considered:

• Must have already been accepted to an appropriate field of study at a recognised higher education institution

Academic Criteria



For individuals applying for the first time for university:

• Completion of matric with an exemption, endorsement or admission to a Bachelor Degree study
• Level 4 pass / 60% (SG) or 50% (HG) for a matric subject which leads to the priority area
• For those who wish to specialise in the foundation level:
• A passing grade in Mathematics/Mathematic Literacy (if the individual matriculated before 2008 when Maths was not compulsory, an overall good performance—average of 50%—may still be considered)
• Level 4 pass / 60% (SG) or 50% (HG) in home language
• For those who wish to specialise in technology subjects but did not take those subjects at a matric level, a pass in Maths or Math Literacy is needed
• A passing grade for all modules studies in the last year of study at university
• Minimum of 55% average across all modules studied in the last year

For existing bursars who are reapplying:

• Must have passed 2/3 of the modules/priority area modules studied in the past year
• Must have a minimum of 50% across all modules and progressing to the next level/year of study

HCI Foundation Busaries

Applications for the 2017 HCI Foundation bursary are now open.

The HCI Foundation Bursary Programme provides financial assistance to academically deserving and financially needy undergraduate students in any field of study and any year of study for a first tertiary qualification, or continuing students who enrol for Honours at a public University or University of Technology in South Africa. Each year the the foundation grants around 950 bursaries to deserving students.

HCI Foundation is the corporate social investment arm of HCI, a black empowerment investment company that has its origins in the Southern African Clothing and Textile Workers’ Union. Our primary concern is the upliftment of all people in South Africa so that all may share in an improved quality of life.

Air Traffic Control Officer Bursary at ATNS

Air Traffic and Navigation Services (ATNS) offers bursaries for students to train towards a career in air traffic management with the goal of becoming an air traffic control officer (ATCO). The program provides each bursar with an opportunity to conduct their studies at the Aviation Training Academy (ATA) in Bonaero Park.

The ATCO Trainee Programme consists of three phases: the Bursary Scheme (a bursary contract), the ATC Learnership (conducted under a fixed-term contract) and an ATC Aerodrome Course and Validation Phase (under fixed term contract). The study bursary provides each bursar with an opportunity to conduct their studies at the ATNS Aviation Training Academy.

ATNS primarily provides an advanced air traffic management service, as well as the implementation and maintenance of a reliable navigation infrastructure.

Phase 1: Bursary Scheme

The following is offered as part of the ATCO Trainee bursary:
Transport to the guest lodge in Johannesburg at the beginning of the training programme and at the end of the programme (if the bursar is from outside Gauteng)
Cost of tuition
Accommodation, on a sharing basis, at a guest lodge arranged by the ATNS ATA for the duration of the core content course
Transport to and from the ATNS ATA as per study requirements for the duration of the core content course
Breakfast, lunch and dinner daily for the duration of the core content course
A monthly allowance payable at the end of each month
10 days of non-academic activities as determined by the study programme co-ordinators.After the initial and core content course (when bursars are posted to an operational control centre for operational exposure learning) they may take care of their own accommodation, meals and transport (ATNS will then increase the monthly allowance) orbursars can opt to continue to stay in the guest lodge as provided by the ATNS ATA.


Phase 2: ATCO Learnership

Once a bursar has successfully completed Phase 1 of the ATCO Trainee programme, he/she will have graduated with an ATSO license rating qualification. The next step to becoming an ATCO is to validate this rating on operational positions. The following is offered as part of the Learnership programme:

In order to validate the ATSO rating and continue with the ATCO training programme, ATNS may offer the bursar an 18 month fixed-term contract (in terms of the bursary contract, the successful bursar accepts this contract) and a salary during the term of this contract.

Bursars should please note:
they are no longer eligible for company accommodation, transport
medical aid and pension are not provided as benefits during this contract period and ATCO trainees should ensure that adequate measures are taken to provide for these
Should a bursar choose not to undertake the fixed-term contract, ATNS may claim the investment made to date by the company.

Phase 3: ATCO

The offer of permanent employment as an Air Traffic Control Officer (ATCO) will include an ATCO salary in line with the Air Traffic Services (ATS) salary matrix and full benefits (including medical aid, pension etc.). On acceptance of the offer, the ATCO Trainee becomes a fully-fledged member of the ATNS air traffic services team.

Bursary at the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC)

2017 bursary applications are now open at the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC). The Organization has a bursary programme that assists selected learners who are academically talented but lack financial resources to pursue higher education. Every year IDC allocates bursaries to deserving students. The programme focuses mainly on law, commerce, science and engineering and covers tuition, accommodation and books. The corporation views education as key to growing the country.

Applicants may enrol at any accredited South African University, University of Technology or FET college.
The IDC has been around since 1940 and is a national development finance institution belonging to the government and is designed to promote economic and industrial development.

Requirements

South African citizens with a valid ID number residing in the Republic of South Africa and who qualify for admission to a University or University of Technology and TVET (Technical vocational education and training) college, and are not studying with the aid of an employer or bursary.
Applicants must have grade 12 Maths and Science with a minimum of a B aggregate symbol.
Applicants already at university must have an average of a C Aggregate Minimum.
University or University of Technology students who have already successfully completed one or more years will be considered on their Grade 12 and most recent academic results.

If you are already studying towards a degree course for which you are applying for a bursary, you must have passed all courses for which you have registered at the university for the study period already completed.
Applications must be for full time studies towards an academic degree at an accredited South African university or university of technology.

No bursaries are awarded for studies at a college, e.g. (Damelin, Boston, etc) or private university.
Fields of study in which bursaries are awarded have to be directly related to industry, and will only include the following:

Engineering: BSc Industrial, Chemical, Electrical, Electronic, Mechanical, Mining, Metallurgy, Civil, Analytical Chemistry and Geology. (University of technology level leading to B. Tech).
